The neighbors of Bungalow Heaven gathered in McDonald Park this December for their 2nd Annual Christmas in the Park. Neighbors donated ornaments and unwrapped toys to create a loving tree and gift for families at Union Station Homeless Services Village. Everyone visited with Santa, enjoyed holiday treats and shared time with their neighbors in an afternoon of fun. Afterwards, Santa and his sleigh were transported to the village where his helpers presented the Christmas tree and gifts to the families. Thanks to everyone who helped make this a loving and giving event.

Zac and Abby Sunderland’s (teenage sailors) special appearance at the July 13th BHNA general meeting was a real treat for the attending youngsters and neighbors who came to hear about their spirit of adventure and ask them questions. They each grew up around boats and described in detail, along with a PowerPoint and video presentation, about their solo adventures at sea.

Zac has been a young sailor since he was 4 years old. He eventually bought a sailboat with his savings, restored it with his father’s help and named it “Intrepid.” His circumnavigation included an encounter with pirates, mechanical problems and intense weather out at sea. On July 17, 2009, Zac became the youngest person ever to sail around the world and the first under the age of 18.

Abby wanted to sail around the world since she was 13 years-old and after she watched her brother’s successful adventure, she set sail at the age of sixteen on a non-stop six month trip at sea, leaving on January 23, 2010 on her boat, “Wild Eyes.” On June 10, 2010 when she was halfway around the world, a huge rogue wave rolled her boat 360 degrees and tore off her mast and ended her trip in the middle of the Indian Ocean. She candidly described how she looked to her faith to overcome fearful challenges. She had to rewire her navigational system and deal with the unpredictable weather while going after her dream. Abby has turned her experience into a message for young people to encourage them to shoot for the stars and shoot for something bigger than what is typically expected of a teenager.

Kids and parents with red, white and blue decor would march on the sidewalks to patriotic music while being cheered on by flag-
waving folks sitting in their lawn chairs along the way. The parade would eventually end its journey at a homeowner’s yard. There, neighbors brought side dishes and the homeowner grilled hot dogs. The event provided everyone a chance to slow down, have lunch under the shade of the oak trees and catch up on the lives of their neighbors. This tradition ended a couple of years ago when the original organizer’s kids had grown up and moved on to other activities.

The Neighborhood Association thought that this tradition was worthwhile and should continue.	By moving it to McDonald Park this past July 4th and opening it up to the entire Bungalow Heaven community, it now has a new life and tradition.

By Molly Marchetti, photos by Tina Miller & Jim Staub

Every spring Bungalow Heaven is filled with visitors, all here to pay homage to what makes our neighborhood historic, the homes. The Home Tour is a celebration of the people that lived here before us and the artistry of the architecture of a time gone by. In an era where the old is torn down for newer flashier things, it’s good to know that there is still a place where people can come and honor the past.

In some years past it has rained on the event and some tours have been held in the sweltering heat. This year, we could not have asked for nicer weather. It was held earlier in the month this year due to the late occurrence of Easter, which turned out to be just perfect.

This year’s Home Tour took on some new ways of looking at our history. Instead of representing the year a house was built in The Living History Home, the directors of the tour, Mary Gandsey and Rosemary Hyde, and Kristin Stone Productions took a look at showing one of the many years that the home had been lived in previous to now. Kristin Stone played a real estate agent in the 1950’s showing the home to tour goers as if they were perspective buyers.

Another bit of the new came in the form of the brochure. This year Jennifer Errico added a much loved feature article interviewing some of the home owners and their experiences with renovations and living in Bungalow Heaven. It was a treat for many people to read and see photographs detailing the extensive renovations that Russell Lee-Sung performed. It was also in these features that tour goers learned that one couple bought their home in August of last year and another in 1981, showing that there is a quite a range of homeownership that ends up on the tour.

Returning to this year’s tour was the ever popular Garden workshop lead by Elizabeth Neaves. Much like the Garden workshops in the past, this year’s was extremely popular.

Some of you may have had a chance to taste some of the delicious goodies that our neighbors make for the tour and some of you were the bakers. You will all be pleased to know that a cookie cookbook is in the works that will feature many of these tasty treats. It will be for sale at the next Home Tour if all goes according to plan.

Thank you to all of the volunteers that make the Home Tour possible. Here’s to another great tour next year!
